McMurphy, a man with several assault convictions to his name, finds himself in jail once again. This time, the charge is statutory rape when it turns out that his girlfriend had lied about being eighteen, and was, in fact, fifteen (or, as McMurphy puts it, "fifteen going on thirty-five"). Rather than spend his time in jail, he convinces the guards that he's crazy enough to need psychiatric care and is sent to a hospital. He fits in frighteningly well, and his different point of view actually begins to cause some of the patients to progress. Nurse Ratched becomes his personal cross to bear as his resistance to the hospital routine gets on her nerves;

As much as I love this movie, It caused me some anxiety at one point. About a year ago I was severely depressed and my parents checked me into the hospital because I was suicidal. I kept begging them to take me home because every movie portrays mental hospitals as scary, filthy, and full of weird people (Like in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest) and I was afraid I wouldn't feel safe there. I couldn't have been more wrong, because I got the help I needed and it really wasn't that bad. I also learned people in the mental health unit are some of the nicest, most sympathetic, and caring people I've ever met, even the wacky ones. Please don't be scared to ask for help, because you won't get better just sitting there. To be honest, I miss everyone I was there with because we all got along and could talk for hours. I still keep in contact with a guy who was like my best friend in there.
